The Art and Consumerism
#1
We don’t have to be highly educated to understand and believe that everything has a meaning. Like every action has it’s consequences, every decision has it’s reasons. However, art will not be considered as art if it wasn’t completely different from all other things or phenomenon in the world. It does not necessarily has to have a meaning.
There were times when it was believed that every piece of art was
suppose to bring the certain message, stand for a certain ideology, be politically or socially induced. And then Abstract Expressionism kicked in!
Mark Rothko, Cesare Steam, Pollock, Khalil Ibrahim were more or less true abstract expressionist. We couldn’t say that their work didn’t bring any message or were meaningless, but it reflected their own point of view, their mood or their understanding of that moment. Nothing in their artwork was near propaganda, political or social ideology, there were no boundaries and no frames.
As well known art critic, Albert Greenberg, once said: “Illusionists art could only be described by its own limitations”. He believed that art has to be free from the ideological struggles of society, and I strongly agree. ART IS FOR ARTS SAKE!
After all, that’s why art is so powerful and inspiring. It’s different and nothing like any other material in the world.
We are always told that we have to believe in something, that we have to stand for something and we usually do. Believing in a certain religion, being active in politics seems to be essential. Voting and supporting a certain party, having a certain life style, being a part of a certain organization, group and etc. usually defines us as individuals. We are so used to this idea that we forget to do things just because they make us happy, just because we like doing them. People tend to search for a meaning everywhere, which makes them anxious and passionate. It is not a bad thing. It’s just that sometimes we forget how powerful our unconsciousness can be, and that we should stop thinking, analyzing so much and just be, for a little while, ourselves, without any definition.
