POSE! PHOTOGRAPHY! FILM!
What would you do, if at this exact same moment someone came into your room and start taking pictures of you?
The answer is… you would pose!
There is no need to get all negative about it and try to deny it. We usually get confused about the meaning of the word pose. As we imagine someone posing, we imagine that person standing straight, maybe smiling or maybe making funny faces. However, posing is much more and it does not necessarily has to be exaggerated and very obvious. We can actually not to notice, that the subject is posing, however the truth is that everyone is posing if they are aware of the camera in the room.
It’s still a significant secret and mystery, how human body and brain work, therefore you may never know how to explain certain phenomena and people’s actions. We may sit in front of the camera, feel relaxed, calm, with our natural face expression, but still be posing. How?
I believe this is our subconsciousness fault, as we know that we are not alone in the room when the picture is taken. I think, that we cannot be purely natural due to the fact that there is a camera in front of us. We create this image in our heads of how we want to look in a final picture, consciously or not, and therefore, we act differently than usual.
Furthermore, looking from a more philosophical side, the other question arises: is that person in a picture really you? Like, you you? Or is it just a reflection of your mood/ side of personality, which is showing on that exact moment when the picture was taken? Is it possible, that pictures of us are fake and worth nothing since there are not actually “we” in them?
And how you or other people can say, that, for instance, “you look beautiful in this picture”, if it’s actually just a posing figure in a photograph? It is a beautiful posing figure in a photograph, but it’s not actually you, who’s beautiful in this case.
Not to mention the photoshoots, when a huge crew of professional stylists, make up artists, decorators, photographers and etc. combine their powers to create a piece of art. And all you hear is that the model is beautiful. I would rather say, that the model is not necessarily beautiful, but she/ he sure is amazing for making a beautiful pose, creating a beautiful face expression and so on.
People really often do confuse the picture itself and the person in it.
Not to be rude or anything, but most people look better in pictures than in real life. It’s normal, because photographs are the piece of art! They are artificial things, therefore, they can’t reflect 100% of reality.
But there is one thing, when someone photographs you, and completely different, when you are photographing yourself. Selfie- is a new word in Oxford dictionary and in nowadays society. It is believed that selfie is an amazingly fast way to show who you are, where you are, and, probably, what kind of person you are. It takes a few seconds to take a selfie, “pimp” it with certain programmes and filters: make it black&white or antique, reach any kind of exposure you want. After that, there is one click- and your picture is in the world wide network.
Is it an important phenomena in our modern society? Is it something that make our generation improve it’s communication? I would say a strong and definite NO. First of all, it’s a fake communication! You spend your precious time trying to get a “proper” picture, then you stuggle with the comment: What to write in the caption??? Should I quote something? Should I write something funny? It’s frustrating, it’s time consuming, it’s unnecessary.
Secondly, if you send it to your friend, it’s usually a simple one. But God forbid you send an imperfect picture to your crush, or someone you don’t know very well. People usually fake their smiles, try a variety different poses, which often looks funny, especially if you are in public. And what is this all for? Just to keep up with… stupidity I would say.
It’s all fun and games and innocent when selfies are occasional/rare and people making them have a certain point to make. But what about those, who upload their faces to the Internet every day multiple times?! No way this is normal.
